Dr. Cole's Remarks

Dr. Cole's remarks provided some background research efforts to date and how he came to know John Golden. He stated, "Over the last five years, funding sources have been reduced by nearly 80% and research efforts have become increasingly dependent upon philanthropic efforts and individuals committed to funding specific research initiatives... Increasingly private support from individuals and families provides the margin of difference that helps us meet the annual cost of these programs. John Golden is an exceptional example of what can happen when our research efforts partner with the determination of a motivated patient. At the age of 38, John was told that the only solution would be a knee replacement to treat his knee arthritis which at the time eliminated all activities beyond walking and caused him to limp even with activities of daily living. In 2005, John underwent a double cartilage transplant which included a bone and cartilage transplant and a meniscus transplant. Today, John has improved his fitness level to the point where he regularly participates in technical mountain and rock climbing with the ultimate goal of climbing Mount Everest in the spring of 2009."
